New Albany's trick-or-treat will run Saturday, Oct. 31, from 3 to 5 p.m., rain or shine.
The city posted the official announcement on Thursday, Sept. 17, confirming the two-hour window and a firm no-rain-date policy. Konner Barr authored the notice.
Families should plan for whatever weather Oct. 31 brings. The city recommends weather-appropriate costumes and having rain gear on hand.
Safety tips for kids
The city's guidelines cover the basics parents review every year but are worth repeating:
- Trick-or-treat with members of your household or a trusted adult.
- Walk, don't run, from house to house.
- Look both ways before crossing the street and use crosswalks.
- Make sure parents always know where you are going.
- Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating.
- Skip the bicycle. Costumes can tangle in wheels.
- Accept treats only outside a home. Never go inside.
Safety tips for drivers
The city is asking motorists to take extra care during the two-hour window:
- Slow down in residential neighborhoods.
- Watch for children at intersections, on medians and on curbs.
- Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly.
- Put away distractions and turn headlights on early.
For households not participating
Residents who won't be handing out candy should turn off their porch lights, the city said. Parents buying costumes should look for flame-retardant materials.
New Albany Parks and Recreation also promoted a separate Trunk-or-Treat event on social media this summer, inviting organizations and teams to decorate their vehicles for the holiday. A date and location for that event have not been confirmed.
