New Albany knocked off previously unbeaten Upper Arlington 28-21 on the road Sept. 11, while Gahanna Lincoln routed defending Division I state champion Olentangy Orange 34-9 at home.
Both local teams are 4-0.
Ackermann scores twice as Eagles win at Upper Arlington
Mason Ackermann led New Albany with two touchdowns on both sides of the ball at Marv Moorehead Stadium. His 2-yard run on fourth-and-goal late in the third quarter pushed the Eagles' lead to 21-7, according to the Columbus Dispatch. He added a defensive touchdown in the second half.
Chase Jackson scored in the first half. A Dispatch photo gallery showed Jackson celebrating with teammate Avery Bastian after the score.
Upper Arlington entered the game 3-0 with a defense that had forced 10 turnovers through three games. First-year head coach Mark Solis had made ball security his top priority all week.
"If we don't turn the ball over, at least we're going to give ourselves a chance," Solis told ABC 6 before the game. "That's been our number one mantra this week."
In Solis' first season after he took over the program in April, the Eagles have won four straight. Their quarterback, a transfer from Arkansas who joined the team in mid-July, has had limited time to learn the offense.
Upper Arlington fell to 3-1.
