New Albany drivers face about a month of one-way restrictions on Beech Road between Jug Street and US-62 after the city scheduled road repairs to begin Monday, Oct. 19.
The work will improve the road surface to handle traffic while the city plans permanent improvements on the corridor, according to a city notice posted by Konner Barr. The timeline is weather-dependent.
The city is using a two-phase approach to manage traffic through the construction zone.
During Phase 1, covering Jug Street to Miller Road, only northbound traffic will pass through the work area. Beech Road between Miller Road and US-62 will stay open to two-way traffic during that stretch.
During Phase 2, covering Miller Road to US-62, only southbound traffic will move through the work zone. Beech Road between Jug Street and Miller Road will remain two-way.
The city advised drivers to expect delays and allow extra travel time.
Permanent improvement project planned for 2027
The current repairs are separate from a permanent improvement project the city has planned for a different segment of the corridor. That project covers Beech Road between Smiths Mill Road and Jug Street and is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027. The city is targeting substantial completion by the fourth quarter of 2027.
The city said it adjusted the permanent project's construction start date to reduce the overall duration of traffic impacts on the corridor.
Data center construction lines the corridor
The Beech Road corridor is also home to several data center projects listed on the city’s project updates page. The city's project updates page lists facilities for QTS, AWS, Meta and others at addresses ranging from 675 to 1500 Beech Road.
The Green Chapel Road reconstruction, which began in May, routes detour traffic through Beech Road, Jug Street and Clover Valley Road. Whether that detour is still active and how it overlaps with the new Beech Road lane restrictions is not clear from available city notices.
Drivers can find traffic exhibits and additional details on the city's Beech Road construction notice.
