Gatsby's Bar and Grille was back open Aug. 23, just three days after flash flooding left water four to five feet deep in the Gahanna restaurant's basement and caused an estimated $20,000 to $25,000 in damage.

The turnaround happened because roughly 30 volunteers showed up with bobcats, dryers, fans, shovels and brooms to dig out the Hamilton Road bar, owner Doug Vance told NBC4.

"The Copperheads Motorcycle Club, the Knights of Columbus, I can't tell you all the people that jumped in and helped … Thirty people out there working and I know half of them … It's humbling. It's very heart wrenching to be honest with you," Vance said.

The cleanup began Thursday afternoon, Aug. 20, after Gahanna received about 6 inches of rain in less than 24 hours, according to the City of Gahanna. Runoff from Hamilton Road combined with an overflowing Rocky Fork Creek and sent floodwaters rushing through the property at 151 N. Hamilton Road.

The flooding destroyed Gatsby's sand volleyball court, swept patio furniture down the road and left about four inches of silt and mud across the back parking lot. Inside, hot water tanks, coolers and televisions were damaged. Hundreds of dollars worth of alcohol had to be thrown out after contact with floodwater.

Kim Brown, who has worked at Gatsby's for nearly 27 years, was on the property when the water hit. She described floodwaters rushing across the grounds in an Aug. 21 WSYX ABC6 report, and said staff spent days washing every cup, glass and beer bottle by hand.

By Sunday, customers new and old filled the bar. Regular customer Tami Ranalli said she and others wanted to get back as soon as the doors reopened, calling the staff and owners "great people."

Vance said community members have suggested setting up a GoFundMe to help cover the damage. He declined.

The best way to support Gatsby's right now, Vance said, is to stop in, have a beer or a pizza and say hello.

No timeline has been announced for rebuilding the volleyball court or fully restoring all damaged areas. Gatsby's is open at 151 N. Hamilton Road in Gahanna.
