Gahanna Lincoln head football coach Bruce Ward owns the program's all-time wins record after Friday, Sept. 18's 10-7 road victory over Hilliard Darby. The win, Ward's 91st at Gahanna Lincoln, pushed the Lions to 5-0 at the halfway point of the season.
Gahanna Lincoln Athletic Director Matthew Welsh confirmed the milestone on X shortly after the final whistle, saying Ward had become the all-time winningest coach at Gahanna Lincoln High School with his 91st victory. The official Gahanna Lincoln Athletics account posted the same congratulations.
The team's football account declared the Lions had won "the battle at Hilliard Darby" and moved to 5-0.
Ward took over the program in December 2013, replacing John Snoad, who compiled a 32-30 record with one playoff appearance in six seasons. Ward arrived after spending 13 years with the Beechcroft football program, according to a Gahanna-Jefferson school district announcement at the time of his hiring.
The turnaround under Ward has been dramatic. A post by the football media account @270gridiron on Instagram credited his tenure with a 2022 regional championship, three straight outright Ohio Capital Conference (OCC) titles and the first 10-0 regular season in school history.
Friday's game was tight. Gahanna Lincoln entered at 4-0; Hilliard Darby stood at 3-1, according to NBC4. The final margin was three points, with the Lions holding on for the low-scoring road win. Cleveland.com's scoreboard confirmed the 10-7 final.
NBC4 described Week 5 as the halfway point of the high school football season. Gahanna was among a handful of programs trying to stay unbeaten heading into Friday's games. The Columbus Dispatch assigned a reporter to cover the matchup at Hilliard Darby, a sign of the attention the Lions' unbeaten run has drawn.
Five weeks in, Ward's Lions have not lost a game and their coach has not run out of milestones.
