Visit Gahanna has highlighted five parks and trails for enjoying fall foliage through late October.

Visit Gahanna posted a guide on Wednesday, Oct. 21, recommending five spots to see autumn foliage before the end of October: Friendship Park, Creekside Park, the Big Walnut Trail, Hannah Park and Gahanna Woods State Nature Preserve.

The guide urges residents to plan visits through late October, noting that foliage timing varies year to year depending on weather. Most Gahanna parks are open sunrise to dusk; specific hours are listed at exploregahannaparks.com.

Friendship Park spans nearly 23 acres near Gahanna's Historical Settlement, according to CityScene Magazine. The park features walking paths, a community garden and access to the Big Walnut Creek area. Once home to the Big Walnut Country Club, one of the first country clubs in the nation for Black community members, the park now includes pickleball and basketball courts, a Story Trail and a playground.

Creekside Park sits along Big Walnut Creek in the heart of the Creekside District. Walking paths, gardens and an adjacent arboretum with more than 40 labeled tree species make it a draw for leaf-peepers. Coffee shops and restaurants surround the park for a post-walk stop.

Big Walnut Trail follows the Big Walnut Creek corridor through Gahanna. The paved, out-and-back route covers 4.4 miles with 88 feet of elevation gain, according to AllTrails. It connects several parks, crosses scenic footbridges and passes public artwork near the boardwalks. Dogs are welcome on a leash. The trail has grown from four miles to roughly six miles within the city since 2019, CityScene reported in February.

Hannah Park offers a barn-style shelter overlooking a small pond, tennis and pickleball courts, basketball courts and a one-mile walking path, according to CityScene.

Gahanna Woods State Nature Preserve is home to the state's only known population of cypress-knee sedge, an endangered grass-like plant found in its wetland area. Visitors can explore buttonbush swamps, vernal pools and more than 99 acres of forest along miles of hiking trails.

Gahanna's parks and recreation director called the city's green spaces "part of the foundation of the community" in CityScene's February coverage.

The Great Gahanna Goblin Fest returns Friday, Oct. 23, according to the parks department website.
