Franklin County residents can shred sensitive documents, recycle old electronics and donate food at a free event Saturday, Nov. 7.

The Franklin County Auditor's Office is hosting its "Shred Hunger" event at Valleyview Elementary School, 2989 Valleyview Dr. in Columbus, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., according to the auditor's event page. The event is open to the public at no cost.

The drive combines three services in one stop: secure paper shredding, electronics recycling and a household-needs collection benefiting Student Success Stores, a Columbus-area nonprofit.

What to bring

The auditor's office lists suggested food donations including peanut butter, jelly, crackers, oatmeal packs, granola bars, noodles, pasta sauce, canned vegetables, ramen noodles, applesauce pouches and pancake mix.

Accepted electronics include computers, laptops, cell phones, cameras, CD and DVD players, printers, copiers, fax machines, scanners, monitors, TVs, network equipment and circuit boards.

Where donations go

Student Success Stores operates free, anonymous in-school stores for students in grades 6–12 from economically disadvantaged communities, according to the nonprofit's website. Co-founders Nicole Hebert-Ford and Jason Phillips launched the organization after winning the United Way of Central Ohio's Pitch to Ditch Poverty competition in 2015. The stores stock hygiene products, easy-to-eat food, school-code clothing and school supplies.

The nonprofit serves schools across Columbus and Whitehall, according to its Idealist profile.

Columbus City Schools promoted the event on social media Oct. 31, noting the drive is one week away.
